Coastal Adaptation and Uncertainties: The Need of Ethics for a Shared Coastal Future

چکیده

Coastal hydro-morphodynamics present significant uncertainties, one order of magnitude larger for sediment transport than the driving hydrodynamics. Met-ocean factors (waves, currents, and levels essentially) are normally selected from a probability distribution, where only central trend is considered, then analysis hydro-morphodynamic processes carried out within deterministic framework. This often based on non-updated topo-bathymetry, with implicit error intervals many variables, which results in uncertainties that, unless presented an ethical perspective, tend to hinder proactive decision making thus result growing coastal degradation. To address this challenge, article starts uncertainty water/sediment fluxes resulting morphodynamic impacts under average storm conditions, proving need include explicit subsequent assessments. The develops approach field lab data, considering how they extrapolated estimate key variables sustainability engineering decisions, illustrated terms longshore sand transport. Such variable estimation presents large requires stricter extreme events, serves illustrate transmission uncertainties. concludes short overview implications that these may have risk assessments making, discussing without suitable assessment socio-economic mistrust, will limit necessary optimism future sustainability.

Choosing a Future Shoreline for the San Francisco Bay: Strategic Coastal Adaptation Insights from Cost Estimation

In metropolitan regions made up of multiple independent jurisdictions, adaptation to increased coastal flooding due to sea level rise requires coordinated strategic planning of the physical and organizational approaches to be adopted. Here, we explore a flexible method for estimating physical adaptation costs along the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Our goal is to identify uncertainties that can ...

6. Fisheries and coastal ecosystems: the need for integrated management

How can it be that fisheries appear in trouble every time newspapers report on them? Coastal and marine fisheries have existed for a long time. Initially, people waded along the shore gathering shells and harpooned whatever marine mammal or large fish ventured inshore. Only those fish and other animal species that were large and had very narrow coastal distribution were then in danger of being ...

Coastal upwelling in a warmer future

[1] Coastal upwelling helps set the physical context for marine ecosystems, and upwelling zones are among the most productive regions of the global ocean. Unlike earlier models, two state-of-the-art climate models exhibit little change during the next century in the magnitude and seasonality of coastal upwelling, but climate models are still probably not sufficiently developed (for example, the...
